Blairsville is the seat of Union County and, for our money, the best base camp in North Georgia if your idea of a vacation involves being outside. Georgia’s highest mountain is here. So is one of the oldest state parks in the country. So is a courthouse square that still functions like a town square is supposed to.
Brasstown Bald: the top of Georgia
At 4,784 feet, Brasstown Bald is the highest point in the state, and the view from the summit observation deck reaches into four states on a clear day — Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and South Carolina.
From the parking area it’s a steep, paved half-mile to the top. It’s short but it does not mess around; the grade is real. If that’s not going to work, a shuttle bus runs from the lot to the summit for a small fee during the operating season. At the top there’s a visitor center and museum alongside the 360-degree deck.
A few practical notes: it’s routinely 15–20 degrees colder at the summit than in town, and it’s frequently socked in by clouds when Blairsville is clear. Check conditions before you drive up. The road and facilities operate seasonally, so confirm hours in late fall and winter.
Vogel State Park
Vogel is one of Georgia’s two oldest state parks, built in part by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, and it still has that character — stone work, old cabins, a small lake with a beach.
Lake Trahlyta sits at the center with an easy 1-mile loop around it and a small waterfall at the spillway. For something harder, the Bear Hair Gap Trail is a 4-mile loop with an overlook down onto the lake, and the Coosa Backcountry Trail is a serious 12.9-mile day for experienced hikers.
In fall, the drive to Vogel along US-19/129 through Neels Gap is one of the best foliage drives in the state. The park hosts a Fall Festival in October with hayrides, a cakewalk, live music, and campfire storytelling, plus an annual tree lighting in December.
Waterfalls
- Helton Creek Falls — two falls, very short walk from the parking area, reached via a rough gravel road. Highest reward-to-effort ratio in the county.
- Trahlyta Falls — at Vogel, visible from a short walk off the lake loop.
- DeSoto Falls — a bit south toward Dahlonega, with two falls on an easy well-maintained trail.
- Sea Creek Falls — small, quiet, and usually uncrowded.
Spring is peak flow. Late summer can slow some of these to a trickle.
The Appalachian Trail and Neels Gap
The A.T. crosses US-19/129 at Neels Gap, about 15 minutes from downtown Blairsville, and it’s the only place on the entire 2,190-mile trail where the path goes through a building — the breezeway of Mountain Crossings outfitter.
In March and April you’ll see northbound thru-hikers arriving 30 miles into their journey, frequently mailing home a third of what they packed. It’s a genuinely fun place to stand around for twenty minutes. Blood Mountain, Georgia’s highest A.T. peak, is a strenuous 4.3-mile round trip from the gap.
Downtown Blairsville
The historic square wraps around the old Union County courthouse, now a history museum. It’s walkable in fifteen minutes and worth an afternoon — antique shops, a bookstore, local artisans, coffee, and lunch.
What makes the square special is how hard the town leans into it seasonally:
- Scarecrows on the Square — merchants build scarecrows in October and the community votes
- Blairsville Boo Bash — downtown trick-or-treating, costumes, contests
- Nutcrackers on the Square — the November version of the same idea
- Christmas Open House and the Cookie Crawl — December
- Holiday on the Square & Christmas Parade — first Saturday in December
- Tour of Trees — 50+ decorated trees and a gingerbread village, all month
- Kris Kringle Mountain Market — 75+ vendors, Santa, and Christmas train rides
The festival calendar
- Mountain Heritage Festival — Labor Day weekend, history and culture
- Sorghum in the Mountains — October; sorghum syrup making, greased pole climbing, log sawing, live music. Wonderfully specific.
- Butternut Creek Festival — a large juried arts and crafts show at Meeks Park with 100+ artisans
- BEAR (Blairsville Extreme Adventure Race) — an 8-hour team race through mountains, rivers, and trails starting at Meeks Park

Meeks Park
Worth a mention on its own — a large, well-kept county park with playgrounds, ball fields, walking trails along Butternut Creek, picnic pavilions, and a disc golf course. If you’re traveling with kids and need somewhere to let them run for two hours, this is the answer.
When to visit
October is Blairsville’s month. Foliage in Union County typically peaks mid-to-late October, the festival calendar is packed, and Brasstown Bald and Vogel are both at their best. It books out early — plan ahead.
Spring brings waterfalls at full volume and thru-hiker season at Neels Gap.
Summer is comfortable at elevation, with lake and creek swimming and long evenings.
December turns the square into something genuinely charming, and cabin rates are friendlier.
