Hiking

A hiker’s paradise, the Northeast Georgia mountains offer a variety of hiking experiences, from easy to strenuous. In fact, Towns and Union Counties even have a portion of the Appalachian Trail in their area.

At 2.6 miles out and back, High Shoals Falls trail is considered an easy to moderate hike, and it will take about 2.5 hours to complete. With 2 breathtaking waterfalls, the trail is lovely and has an observation deck at the second waterfall.

In this point-to-point very strenuous trail, hikers will begin at the second highest mountain on the Georgia AT and end 11.7 miles later at the lowest trailhead gap.

Appalachian Trail: Hogpen Gap to Unicoi Gap

At 13.4 miles, this moderately difficult trail lets hikers experience the beginning of the Chattahoochie River and even take a side trip to Brasstown Bald, the highest peak in Georgia.

Brasstown Bald Trail

This paved, steep trail takes visitors from the parking lot of Brasstown Bald to the Visitor Information Center at the summit of Georgia’s highest peak. At a little less than a mile, the climb may be steep, but the 360 degree view at the top priceless! Note: There is a parking fee, and a shuttle is available.

Jacks Knob Trail

Also beginning at the parking area for Brasstown Bald, the Jacks Knob Trail is an access path to the Appalachian Trail. At about 4.4 miles point-to-point, the trail is steep in some places.

Arkaquah Trail

Just as the previous 2 trails, Arkaquah also begins in the parking area for Brasstown Bald and is a 5.5 mile, difficult point-to-point hike that ends at Track Rock Gap.

Meeks Park
